We formed our mini-soccer club in 2000. It was a deliberate strategy to develop a feeder system for our senior football club, and our aim was always to develop a strong base at mini-soccer level, which would then spring one team a year into Colts, and eventually provide a pool of players for the seniors. More importantly however, in this village like many others of the same size up and down the land, there was very little for children aged 5 to 16 to do, and we set out to provide them with an opportunity to develop both their football and social skills in their own village. It has no doubt saved a lot of fuel costs for parents taking their kids to and from St. Neots and Huntingdon over the years!!
We also set out with some very strong principles in mind. We observed that other clubs only picked the best kids to play in their teams, and that they did that through trial and rejection. We decided as a principle that it was wrong to do this to children, and therefore as a club, we would be inclusive and welcoming to all who applied to join us. It has been fantastic over the last couple of years to see children arrive at the club who have lacked coordination and basic skills, and perhaps as a result on the fringe of their social groups, but who now belong in a team, have plenty of friends, and good coordination and football skills. It has also been terrific to watch parents show great pride in both their children, and through volunteer work, in the running of the club. Parents too have benefited from the social aspects, and we have regular events for them such as Dad's Matches and Ladies Challenge games - funny to see all these sore knees in the ensuing days.
In 2008 with two Colts teams and a number of Minisoccer teams ranging from Under 7 to Under 10 we probably reached our maximum capacity for a village of our size, and the facilities we have available, however, from the 2008-09 season onwards, as our own children move on, the number of teams are going to reduce dramatically and the facilities become under utilized. We need the odd parent and
some volunteers to help put new emphasis into mini soccer to ensure the future of the club and to enable our Chartered Standard Status continue well into the future. We need volunteers to start working on redeveloping and growing our mini soccer set up, we have all the equipment, we have the coaches to help, all we need now is you, a parent or
two to volunteer!.
